Dow Chemical to introduce new solar roof tiles to enhance cell efficiency to 15%

U.S. Dow Chemical Company (DOW-US; DOW) recently announced that they will set up renewable energy sector. And will work with First Solar (FSLR-US) launched a solar energy competition.

“TheStreet.com” reports, Dow said in a press release detailing the new products will be combined with roof tiles and solar, and said, traditional roof tiles also install this new technology, and a new roof tiles tablets will not have any impact on the house.

Dow said that these roof tiles using PV systems (BIPV) materials, the use of high-performance copper indium gallium selenide (Copper Indium Gallium Selenide, referred to as CIGS) thin photocell batteries at the end, and use sandwich structure composed of traditional processing methods.

Dow did not disclose the source of CIGS cells, after all, they already have their own ability to develop the material, but it is also possible that development of CIGS to other companies that purchased. These companies include Nanosolar, Global Solar (TAN-US), MiaSole, HelioVolt. This four companies are private companies, but only Global Solar full-scale production CIGS products.

More than a year ago, IBM announced a partnership with Tokyo Ohka Kogyo co-development of copper indium gallium selenide technology, a joint venture case, and may in 2010 or 2011, the company licensed to solar energy. With the target of production of solar cells the cost of electricity caused by pressure less than 1 dollar per watt. This solar energy technology is a long-term goal, and will increase the efficiency of solar cell business, 15%, at present the efficiency of markets in the region of 10%.

HelioVolt announced plans to achieve 12.2% efficiency, while the Global Solar said it expects eventually to reach 14% efficiency.

In theory, these efficiency goals are feasible. In 2008, the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory in the use of conventional techniques, had reached 19.9% efficiency.

First Solar was widely regarded in the industry’s efforts are leading to other companies.
